The StarGnats are being built by Losshaven Engineering Corporation under contract from Seinar Fleet Systems as a prototype fighter in a line the larger craft are experimenting with. Primarily used for local or atmospheric defense, reconnaissance and interception thay are fast, and are very difficult targets. They are cheap, which has helped their acceptance into the Medj'K'Ai Nebula Peace Corps, but are also sponsored by the ruling Senator's family.
Simulations show they could be prone to easy damage, and hence tend to be worry pilots used to Headhunters. StarGnats pilots tend to try and avoid taking on fast, heavy fighters and have panicked in tests when faced with large numbers of opponents. Nonetheless, LEC and Seinar insist they could be very good interceptors, promising speed improvements from its pair of Ion Engines should the StarGnat pass its field trials successfully. The StarGnats have no in-built environmental controls, so pilots must wear environmental support suits (see the RCR).
If the StarGnats
need to be deployed anywhere other than Losshaven, the Ravens are reliant on a carrier or freighter
of some kind to transport them elsewhere within the Nebula. Needless to say, the StarGnats are
seldom employed elsewhere!
Note: In game terms, the StarGnats will all be subject to one or more flaws. They are
prototypes after all!
